speaking of high school...
the company that our organization shares office space with recently hired a new communications person - a person i went to high school with. she works out of the vancouver office but was up for meetings, so when they told me, i went down to say hello. we weren't necessarily friends in high school - i was kind of the kid who was just sort of friendly with everyone, i had my little group of best friends but i also had a smattering of people i hung out with now and again. this girl worked with my friends at the dairy queen (the guy refused to hire me after hiring all of my friends, smart move) and we did go to australia together as part of a big school group when i was 15, but i never really knew her that well. anyway, when i went down to say hello, i was surprised by her somewhat cool demeanor - i mean, we weren't really friends but we certainly weren't enemies. she was kind of a geek in high school but so was i, i just hid it under more expensive clothes and a better hairdo. i couldn't decide if it was because she figured she was smarter than me (which she likely is) or because i was a bit more "popular" in high school and she associated me with some of my more popular, bitchier friends (friends i dumped as soon as i left high school. small town, you know? you're kind of stuck with who you're stuck with.)
anyway, we ended up at this social marketing thing last week together, and i was like "fuck it" and just chatted as if i didn't notice this icy wind blowing in my face. soon she warmed up and started asking me about people from high school, and then it came out.
she said "i have to ask. do you ever hear from kyle?"
ooooooh kyle. kyle was my boyfriend in high school, he moved to our small community from The Big City in 10th grade, he was tall with black hair and blue blue eyes. he was a basketball star and SOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooo cute. he worked at dairy queen with her and my other friends. he bought an 80s camaro and was so adorable. kyle dumped me when he had a streak of 4 bad basketball games, and his dad felt that his relationship with me was "affecting" his game. i was crushed. i remember watching the game, seeing his dad SO pissed off and knowing that was it.
so i said "yeah a few emails over the years. but funnily enough, one of my best friends went to university with him. she had a massive crush on him."
"who didn't, half of the school had a crush on kyle."
i had no idea. seriously - i mean, he was cute but slightly dorky, not cool-dude like the HOCKEY player guys (hey, i'm canadian. hockey trumps basketball for most girls, but not this one).
then she dropped the bomb:
"i never liked you because you went out with him."
ha. HA. seriously.
i laughed, said "well, if it helps, he dumped me and broke my heart" and she laughed, and all was forgiven.
ah high school.
if anyone (coughcoughrichardthedouche) tells me high school was the best time of their lives, i feel sorry for them. you could not PAY me to punch those years into the dash of my delorian.
