i actually think this is one of the few news items about a taser where its use was actually warranted.
he had a knife. i know someone in the hospital there, so i've heard the entire story. he was slashing at people. he was threatening to stab people. they tried for quite some time to talk him down. the security guards first, then the RCMP. he had a guy in a bed next to him. while i think that cops should always use physical force before a taser, in this case there WAS a weapon and a guy willing to use it. it was a better alternative than being shot. i'm wondering why/how the guy had a knife in the first place, hospital staff i would think should make sure people don't bring weapons into the hospital when they're checked in. luckily all's well that end's well, no one was hurt (well, he has some bruises and it freaked him out but at least he's alive) and though i'm so anti-taser in most cases, i think it was likely warranted here.
i personally feel that a taser is used only when the only other option is a gun. there were a few cases over the last decade where delusional/drugged out guys had knives and were shot and killed by the police, because that's the risk you take when brandishing a weapon when the cops are in front of you. whether you're 82 or 22, a weapon is a weapon. so here, the taser did what it was supposed to: immobilize a violent person with a weapon with non-lethal means.
and no, i'm not a cop, not a huge fan of cops, but they do have a job to do. i'm sad for this man that he's so delusional that he's violent, and i hope that his family can take the precautions to ensure he doesn't get weapons and is not a danger to himself or others again.
